Larmes de princesse sirène (Mermaid princess tears)
[Brand comment] It is a mysterious shirring dress that expresses the joy of falling in love with flowers and shed tears with baroque pearls. It is a collaged work with printed pattern on the fabric based on a golden decoration that represents scales, scattered with flowers and baroque pearls of 16th century Flemish paintings and an octopus specimen from the marine museum magazine, and a summer dress that is elegantly light and comfortable to wear both under the sun and indoors, fitting along the body of the person who wears it as if it was tailored for the person.

The theme of this work is the tears of the Little Mermaid. There are many legends about mermaids in various countries, the most famous of which is “The Little Mermaid (Den Lille Havfrue)” by Danish writer Andersen. The mermaid fell in love with a human prince who saved her from a storm and made a deal with a sea witch to get her human legs. The prince, however, is betrothed to a princess from a neighboring kingdom. The mermaid’s love went unrewarded, and she threw herself into the sea, disappearing into foam in the morning sun. In Asia, there is a legend that the tears of a mermaid become pearls. Based on these legends, this work presents an image of the moment when the mermaid, on the verge of disappearing, sees her beloved prince, and her tears, shed in the joy of love, turn into baroque pearls and fall on brilliant flowers. A baroque pearl is an irregular-shaped pearl. The shape of each pearl is unique, which is why jewelers in the Art Nouveau period of the 17th and 19th centuries created many skillful pieces.

The cameo of white shells on the left and right sides of the dress represent the marble statues that the Little Mermaid found at the bottom of the sea before she became a human form. Specimen drawings of octopuses from marine natural history books are placed in several places. The scaly golden ornaments are metaphors for the fact that even if the Little Mermaid changes into human form, she cannot change the fact that she is a mermaid.
